Our Future Work

Even though we made a significant amount of progress on our lane detection program, we had a limited amount of time to work on it, so there is still a lot more work that could be done. Here are a few things we would like to do as future work:

  1. Perfect our algorithm to detect all lanes, including lanes that are faded or broken. We could try to do this with a Kalman filter, which would predict future lane locations.

  2. Detect stop lights. This would be a more difficult task due to the changing colors and regions of interest but would definitely be a valuable addition to our algorithm.

  3. Speed detection. This is something that we considered doing for the second portion of our project, but we ran out of time. The idea would be to detect highway markers and use those to calculate the vehicle speed, since we would know both the distance from the markers and the time between each marker.
